Once again ACORN: voter fraud, or voter caging victim?

Posted by John Hummel on October 20, 2008

Three new links about the “OMG there’s voter fraud out there”, while in reality there’s a concerted effort to remove people from the voting rolls.

The first comes from CNN, which concludes that the recent brewhaha over ACORN is less about ACORN trying to scam anyone – but ACORN being scammed:

Raw Story has a clip from MSNBC interview with Professor Jonathan Turley about how the recent challenges to the voter registration roles is more like “voter suppression” than anything else. Clip is down at the bottom of the page.

And then you have this devastating table that takes each of the charges against ACORN and shows them to be pretty much crap.

Um – next?

More ACORN issues as they struggle with embezzlement

Posted by John Hummel on October 16, 2008

I think the “OMG ACORN is going to destroy the fabric of democracy” charge is overblown, but the last thing they need is to have their founder’s brother be charged with embezzling $1 million from the organization.

So ACORN is looking to split itself from founder Wade Rathke. Yeah, that’s going to be a messy divorce.

Do Republicans love ACORN – or hate ACORN?

Posted by John Hummel on October 15, 2008

You could probably ask if ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which works to get more housing and influence for the poor, is a good thing or not. Or if their voter registration drive is full of voter registration fraud or the voter registration issues they’ve had are common among other large voter registration drives.

But the question of what Republicans think about ACORN is more complex. Right now, they’re the boogie man, and according to NPR, the two groups have been fighting over issues for years. Yet as late as 2006, Senator McCain gave a speech praising the organizations efforts.

Hate ACORN? Love ACORN? Can the Republican and their candidate decide – before or after election day?

Massive voter registration fraud – by 2006 GOP staffers

Posted by John Hummel on October 15, 2008

There’s been plenty of screaming about the voter registration issues stemming from ACORN, but it turns out, this isn’t the first time this has happened.

Evidently, back in 2006, the Califonia GOP had issues with accusations of voter registration fraud, to the point that they were investigated by state and local authorities.

So the point is: voter registration fraud, or mistakes, or problems, happen. It’s not a conspiracy – no matter how much you wish it would be when things aren’t going your way.
