Lately, it seems that the campaign has taken a blatantly racist tone. You’ve got scumbags shouting “kill him” and “terrorist” when Obama’s name is mentioned at McCain/Palin rallies – and even worse, these charges are left without repudiation by the candidates.
You have complete and utter asshats who thinks its funny to have monkey with the Obama label on it.
Or pundits referring to voting for Obama as the Jihad vote, accusing the Obama was born in Kenya (which he wasn’t – he was born in Hawaii. It’s an American state.). Which helps people like this woman tell McCain that Obama’s “an Arab”, to which McCain gets to respond “No, he’s a decent family man” (as if being of middle eastern descent means you can’t be a good father?). And to reinforce it, the Sacramento GOP puts up a web site calling to Waterboard Obama and ties Obama to Osama bin Laden. While the head of the Florida GOP again tries to tie Obama to bin Laden as people who are friends with terrorists. And then compound that with a conservative leaning group sending out a hate filled DVD about Muslims that portrays them all as evil people.
You have the biggest voice in conservative talk show Rush Limbaugh who first put together a song about “Barack the Magic Negro”, and now is telling listeners that black children are part of a 30 year indoctrination process to be militants and hate America.
People have warned McCain about playing the race card, and so far, his negatives have risen and his poll numbers have dropped. People don’t like it, but perhaps there’s a base that likes these clearly racist assaults upon Senator Obama. Maybe there’s a base of people who will buy these, and will be motivated to vote for McCain and give him just enough of an edge to win some key states.
Only problem? Even the people who you’d think would respond to these racist attacks just aren’t biting:
Reagan Dems and Independents. Call them blue-collar plus. Slightly more Target than Walmart.
Yes, the spot worked. Yes, they believed the charges against Obama. Yes, they actually think he’s too liberal, consorts with bad people and WON’T BE A GOOD PRESIDENT…but they STILL don’t give a f***. They said right out, “He won’t do anything better than McCain” but they’re STILL voting for Obama.
The two most unreal moments of my professional life of watching focus groups:
54 year-old white male, voted Kerry ‘04, Bush ‘00, Dole ‘96, hunter, NASCAR fan…hard for Obama said: “I’m gonna hate him the minute I vote for him. He’s gonna be a bad president. But I won’t ever vote for another god-damn Republican. I want the government to take over all of Wall Street and bankers and the car companies and Wal-Mart run this county like we used to when Reagan was President.”
The next was a woman, late 50s, Democrat but strongly pro-life. Loved B. and H. Clinton, loved Bush in 2000. “Well, I don’t know much about this terrorist group Barack used to be in with that Weather guy but I’m sick of paying for health insurance at work and that’s why I’m supporting Barack.”
I felt like I was taking crazy pills. I sat on the other side of the glass and realized…this really is the Apocalypse. The Seventh Seal is broken and its time for eight years of pure, delicious crazy….
No matter how much some Republicans – obviously not a majority, or even a significant number, but some who are so desperate to put a check in the “win” column they’ll stoke racial anger – are finding that right now, you can’t afford to be a racist.
People want solutions to problems. They want health care they can rely on, not be told “Oh, the market will fix it.” They want to see Wall Street punished for their job losses, and golden parachutes solved. They want to see their 401k’s be useful to them in their retirement years. They want to see their sons and daughters come home safe from Iraq, and having achieved victory by finding bin Laden, killing him and his followers, and then working to build up the country. They want to see their family graduate from college so they can get better jobs. They want to see their roads rebuilt, their government be noble and honest, and for there to be decency and solutions for their lives from the people they elect.
The McCain campaign and the Republicans thought that the race card might lead them to some hope of victory. Instead, it has lead to utter Republican Apocalypse. Maybe from the ashes the old fashioned, conservative values will return to kick out the religious extremist government spying corporate enriching version of the Republican Party has evolved into since the 1970’s. A party that I can respect again, and while I might not always agree, a party that I can have a meaningful debate with and not be called a traitor just for disagreeing.
Until then, the GOP can pay the price for playing with the fire of racism – and I’ll stick a marshmallow on a stick to roast while they burn.
